General Dentistry in Richmond Hill, ON

At Expressions Dental Care, we provide dental care for your entire family. We offer a wide range of general dentistry ranging from regular check-ups and cleanings to the restoration of stained or aging smiles.

As a dental practice, we are strong believers in providing lifelong preventative care. The goal of our hygiene program is to promote excellent oral health from childhood through your adult years.

When people think of the dentist, it is usually because they have a very specific question about the appearance of their smile or because they are having a dental emergency. However, there is now a growing awareness of the links between a person’s oral health and their over-all well being. More and more people are coming to understand that the better they take care of their mouth, the better they are taking care of their bodies as a whole.

It is with this in mind that we say to every one of our patients… “A Healthy Smile, A Healthier You!”

Cerec Onlays and Crowns

Inlays and onlays are two types of dental restorations used to repair teeth that are moderately damaged or decayed. In contrast to crowns these restorations are a more conservative approach to repairing a damaged tooth. They are used to fill in only the damaged portion of the tooth, leaving more of the underlying tooth intact and minimizing irritation to the adjacent gum tissue.

CEREC ceramic restorations are types of restorations that are accomplished using CAD/CAM (computer assisted device/computer assisted manufacture) technology. This type of technology is beneficial to the patient as it requires only one appointment to complete the procedure. This means, you only need to receive dental freezing once and no goopy dental impressions.

During the visit, the filling being replaced or the damaged or decaying area of the tooth is removed, and the tooth is shaped to receive a restoration. An optical 3D image is acquired and the restoration is designed by the Doctor while you wait. Finally the ceramic restoration is bonded to the tooth and polished to a smooth finish.

Mercury Filling Removal

Most of us have had amalgam or ‘silver’ fillings. Amalgam fillings may contain mercury, and are often referred to as metal fillings. Metal fillings were once effective, but very conspicuous and tend to blacken in colour and leak causing decay over time. Their safety has been in question for a number of years due to concerns over the absorption of elemental mercury contributing to several diseases, including Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis, dementia and arthritis.

At Expressions Dental Care we are a mercury free office that places tooth coloured resin fillings as an alternative to traditional metal dental fillings. Tooth coloured fillings can be matched to the shade of a natural tooth and are also known as Composite Resin Fillings. These type of fillings are made of a plastic dental resin and are a strong and durable alternative to the traditional silver fillings.

At Expressions Dental Care, we are committed your overall health and well being. Please contact our team about Mercury Filling Removal.

New Patient Exams

At Expressions Dental Care it is our goal to provide you and your family with the highest quality of cosmetic and general dentistry in a comfortable environment.

expressions dental care richmond hill

Your new patient exam consists of a comprehensive examination and any necessary dental x-rays. During your initial visit to Expressions Dental Care you can expect a complete health history review; a comprehensive head and neck exam with oral cancer screening and complete exam of the hard and soft tissues inside your mouth. We will check your gums for gum disease, your teeth for cavities.

This is a detailed discovery appointment to ensure that we take great care of you and your family. We encourage you to call our office today and find out what all of our patients are raving about and look forward to meeting you soon.

Dental Radiography or x-rays are used to identify problems within the mouth which may lead to further complications later on. Without the use of these pictures it’s not possible to locate hidden structures such as wisdom teeth and cavities which are in the process of formation.

Dental radiographs are also required after a treatment such as implant or bridgework to see if everything is working properly. Problems such as tooth decay and changes in the bone density can be identified through a radiographic image of the mouth. Recently it has been discovered that dental radiography can also help to prevent stroke, which is a third leading cause of death, as it assists in recognizing plaque formations which can lead to stroke if not treated on time.

At Expressions Dental Care we have state of the art digital radiography technology that eliminated the use of harmful chemicals that are biohazardous to our environment and reduces the radiation exposure to our patients. With this technology we are able to communicate better with specialists on your behalf and the patient benefits from lower radiation exposure and a better quality image.

Oral Surgery

Wisdom Teeth

One of the most common oral surgery procedures is the removal of wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth may be extracted due to existing discomfort, decay or to prevent common problems that may arise in the future.

When wisdom teeth begin to erupt, a number of problems may occur. If the jaw is not large enough, the teeth may become impacted and therefore unable to break through the surface of the gums. Often wisdom teeth break partway through the gums, and a flap of gum tissue grows over them causing food and germs to get trapped under the flap and cause gums to become red, swollen, and painful. These are signs of infection. More serious problems can develop from impacted teeth, such as infection, damage to neighboring teeth and bone, or a formation of a cyst.

Wisdom teeth and general extractions can be removed under a local anesthetic or a general anesthetic. Before removing a tooth, a local anesthetic is given to numb the area where the tooth will be removed. A general anesthetic may be used, especially if several or all of your wisdom teeth will be removed at the same time.

Bone Grafts

When a tooth is missing it is often necessary to utilize bone grafting techniques to regenerate some bone in the areas that are deficient. When a person loses a tooth, the surrounding bone collapses. To preserve this bone for a dental implant or for esthetics, bone grafting is used.

A dental bone graft procedure is performed to reverse the bone loss or destruction caused by periodontal disease, trauma, ill fitting dentures, or missing teeth. It is commonly used in our office to augment bone for implant placement, or enhance esthetics of a missing tooth site in the smile.

Sedation

Sedation dentistry is a very effective solution for people who experience anxiety prior to and during their dental visits. It induces a sense of deep relaxation that enables you to feel comfortable while we provide you with excellent care.

sedation dentistry richmond hill

Sedation Dentistry may be for you if you experience any of the following:

  • Intense fear of dental visits
  • A bad dental experience in the past
  • Sensitive teeth
  • Fear of needles
  • Extreme dislike of the smells and tastes associated with dental procedures
  • Strong gag reflex or inability to keep mouth open during treatment
  • Difficulty with traditional ‘numbing’ i.e. the numbing does not take
  • Extensive treatment or multiple procedures to be done at the same time

There are many options for sedation and one is sure to help you:

Oral sedation dentistry medications are routinely and safely prescribed in our office to create a comfortable dental experience for our patients. Oral sedation dentistry maintains a level of consciousness in the patient for comfort, safety and cooperation. In fact, most patients feel as if they have slept through the appointment.

Laughing gas, or nitrous oxide, is an odourless, colourless gas that patients can inhale through a mask placed over the nose. The gas, often pleasantly scented with vanilla or mint, works rapidly. Patients report feeling relaxed, calm, and happy during use. As its nickname implies, laughing gas can sometimes make people feel giddy or giggly, but without losing control. With laughing gas, many procedures on previously anxious patients can be performed with no pain or discomfort. It has the added advantage of being completely reversible, with no lingering grogginess. When a procedure is completed, patients are given oxygen to breathe for a few minutes and the effect of the sedation is completely reversed.

Intravenous sedation means that the sedative medication is administered directly into the bloodstream by an onsite anesthesiologist. This allows the fast onset of sedation and better control of the sedation level. The greatest advantage of IV Sedation is that the patients comfort can be adjusted as required and patients do not recall the procedure when the appointment is complete.

If you have been avoiding dentistry due to fear or anxiety, there are many alternatives to ensure your comfort. Ask us how we can help you control your fears in a warm and relaxed environment with a genuine team who has your best interest and comfort in mind, every step of the way.

Sports Guards

At Expressions Dental Care, we provide custom-made sports guards to protect your teeth while you are having fun. Since they are custom made, they fit well, are more comfortable and will stay in place while playing sports.

The ADA has estimated that over 150,000 sports related tooth injuries are prevented each year through the use of properly fitted mouth guards. Mouth guards not only prevent the teeth from irreversible damage but they also serve to protect the athlete from concussions due to the lower jaw being forced into the base of the skill from impact.

In order for a mouth guard to be effective the guard has to be comfortable and well fitted. Contact our team today to find out more information or to reserve an appointment to have a custom fitted mouth guard and ask us about arranging a group rate for your team.

Dentures

When supporting teeth are not available on either side of a space or the space with missing teeth is quite large, dentures (partial/full) may be a suitable treatment to replace the missing teeth.

A structure is made either with metal (tooth-supported) and/or acrylic (plastic) (tissue-supported). Acrylic is added sometimes to support the prosthesis on the gums.

These prostheses are usually removable and are held in place by clasps, or attachments and/or implant attachments.

A time of accommodation to get used to the fit, chewing comfort, phonetics, etc is usually necessary. Eventually patients can adapt quite well to them.

Although they may not be as comfortable and esthetic as implants, they can be a good, cost-effective treatment for tooth replacement.

Relines and adjustments may need to be made over time due to bone changes, wear, tear or loosening of denture structures (ie.clasps, etc.).

TMJ and Snoring Appliances

TMJ

Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Disorder is a chronic or acute illness affecting the jaw muscles, neck, temporomandibular joints and the teeth.

Symptoms associated with TMJ disorder include:

  • Headaches/Migraines
  • Facial/Jaw pain
  • Neck/ Shoulder pain
  • Sensitive teeth
  • Worn, chipped or cracked teeth
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Clicking or popping in the jaw joints

The causes of TMJ disorder include but not limited to stress, diet, teeth grinding, unconscious teeth clenching and teeth misalignment.

Although the causes of TMJ disorder are so varied, they can often be treated with a removable orthotic or nightguard. In some cases, restoration of the biting surfaces of the teeth, orthodontics, dental bridges or implants can be considered to restore harmony and prevent future problems.

Snoring Appliance

A good night of sleep is very important to our overall health and ability to function effectively throughout the day. Without regular, restful sleep, we perform less effectively, become irritable, and have trouble concentrating. Persistent sleeplessness also causes stress which can lead to a number of more serious ailments.

Snoring can cause sleep disruptions for both the snorer and his or her sleeping partner. Snoring is a sign of partially obstructed breathing during sleep, but it may also be a symptom of a more serious condition known as Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA).

OSA is an illness that causes the soft tissues at the back of the throat to completely block the airway during sleep which can reduce the amount of oxygen reaching the brain. When the body senses that the airway is blocked, the brain “awakens” and takes action to unblock it. It is this continual blocking and unblocking that causes disruptions to sleep.

Because of its impact on sleep, the brain and body, OSA may lead to an increased risk of: heart attack, stroke, depression, increased blood pressure, and death. OSA can also cause irritability, poor memory, and problems in relationships.

Signs of OSA include loud snoring, cessation of breathing during sleep, drowsiness during the day, and restless sleep.

How Our Office Can Help With OSA

Oral Appliance Therapy is one possible treatment for OSA. With this treatment, a small acrylic device, like a retainer, is worn at night. It opens the airway and improves breathing, allowing patients to sleep better.

Oral appliances come in several designs and will be customized to your situation.

We invite you to call us today to learn more about Oral Appliance Therapy as a possible solution.
