Laser Therapy for Gum Disease

At Expressions Dental Care, we offer our Richmond Hill patients laser therapy for the treatment and prevention of gum (periodontal) disease.

What is gum disease?

Gum (periodontal) disease is an infection of the tissues that hold your teeth in place. It's typically caused by poor brushing and flossing habits that allow plaque — a sticky film of bacteria to build up on the teeth and harden. In advanced stages, periodontal disease can lead to sore, bleeding gums; painful chewing problems; and even tooth loss.

Who does it affect?

Gum disease affects mainly adults in their 30s and 40s, according the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NICDR), and is usually caused by:

  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Smoking
  • Chronic illnesses, such as diabetes
  • Certain medications
  • Genetic susceptibility

Laser Therapy for Gum Disease

For treatment of gum disease, our Richmond Hill dentists use a laser to access and remove inflamed gum tissue from around the root of the tooth. When the infected tissue is removed and the root is exposed, root scaling is performed. This involves scraping off the calculus and plaque built up below the gumline and around the root of the tooth. The dentist then smooths the root with instruments to remove any rough spots that might attract bacteria and cause future infections. The area between the gum and the root can then regenerate during the healing process.

Benefits of Laser Therapy for Gum Disease

According to the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD), there are benefits to using lasers for excising diseased gum tissue. This includes:

  • No need for general anesthetic, as is sometimes required for other forms of dental surgery.
  • Lasers can target the diseased areas more precisely and accurately.
  • Bleeding, pain and swelling are limited because periodontal laser therapy is less invasive than regular surgery.
  • Recovery and healing times are generally shorter.
